That depression era photo might be photo-shopped:
(the letters on the sign look 3-D, the lighting, the glistening),
BUT the sentiment is 100% accurate.
I remember seeing a documentary within the past few years,
of large city families (husband/wife)
shipping their children off to farms in the interior of U.S.
The kids became either family members (of more wealthy families),
or just flat out indentured servants.
My wife says it was Amazon Prime, called "Train Children".
I can't find it.

The jockey in the movie was "given up" by his biological family.
That part is very likely totally accurate.
My mother's father (RIP) lost his business in Poughkeepsie, NY,
then drank himself to death, 1935. He was 53 years old.
