HDTV Posing as a High End Monitor?

Quote from maxpi:

hold off on monitors until you can afford an LED backlit LCD. This thing of staring into a fluorescent light is just nuts.. The LED backlighting allows for perfect color registration and expands the color space by 20-30%.

Yep, this is what my monitor looks like when the desktop is empty of apps.

If you want a 30" display then buy a 30" monitor, not a tv. 30" monitors have a resolution of 2560 x 1600 compared to 1920 x 1080 for an hdtv. Like everyone else said an hdtv will look bad if you could even figure out how to hook it up. I have a 30" Samsung 305T.

I was looking at this monitor online. Do you like it? And what's good and bad about it? Looks like it's in the $1000-1200 range. Thanks.

You will do just fine with a 1080 LCD TV instead of 720 LCD.

Blue ray needs 1080 also. I was looking at a new "SQUARE" monitor from NEC and decided to give a LCD tv a shot. I went to ABC warehouse in Michigan and talked to the "COMMISSION" salesman instead of the morons that BEST BUY hires at a little bit above minimumn wage............

Anyway ABC guy said..........try it out with a 1080 and you get twice as many lines for resolution so on a PC you get a GOOD screen. Notice the input is a D-sub plug only.

I broke down and bought a 32 inch, thats max size i would ever consider for a backup monitor. Bought a SONY 32 XBR9, a network Blue Ray player to stream in porn movies, (JOKE) from NETFLIX etc, kicked in a kickass audio system to clear out any cobwebs. :)

Fired all that up and hit the screen for a chart of the ES on a 5 minute chart and BINGO. The picture was just fine as stated from the salesman. I will fully admit that the size is a bit much for a chart ............

PS: Not sure what he said about the lines being better with 1080 vertical but i did understand.............you get a BETTER picture with TWICE as many LINES. Thats all i needed to hear........."LETS DEAL"

DOUBLE PS: When you buy a HDTV, make sure you get one with a clear QAM digital tuner in it............ it costs a few bucks more but it is better. For living room, (not a small room) i have eye on LED backlight. OLED is super good but screen sizes are still SMALL. Electronics these days are like owning a car and being married............gotta keep pouring money into them to keep em happy. HA
Thanks for the detailed response. We especially like the reference to "streaming porn movies" Ha :)

I think what you should be asking is can you use an HDTV as a low-end monitor also because as already pointed out even an nice HDTV has a much lower resolution than say a 20" LCD monitor.

Now the opposite is true, you can use a computer monitor as a high-end TV....
That sounds right. I was looking at a this 25.5" Samsung which seemed okay. It doesn't have as high a resolution as some but does have a TV tuner. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824001281 And these ones http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2 50001077 40000020 1309821328&name=24"

Thanks for the input and info guys. Much appreciated. Anyone else with thoughts on this feel free to jump in. :)

TVs will generally do a better job than monitors when it comes to video, for reasons that will take far too long to explain. Converse is true for "computery" things where the image is generally stable.

If you mostly need a monitor, get a monitor; if you mostly need a video display, get a TV. Or throw in another video card and get both, there is no technical roadblock to running 3 or even more displays.
