Got to say Obama got this one right.

Good for Obama on this one. Fuck the North Koreans we should bury them just to prove a point to that little shit head kim jong un.

Obama Imposes Economic Sanctions on North Korea as Punishment for Sony Hack

President Barack Obama today announced that the United States would place harsh economic sanctions on North Korea in retaliation for their role in the devastating Sony hacks.

The sanctions, aimed at crippling North Korea’s intelligence services, block off access to the US financial system by North Korean officials and anyone who supports them, by freezing transactions and preventing from accessing property or entering the United States.

Earlier, Obama had promised a “proportional” response to North Korea’s cyberattack on Sony, supposedly in retaliation for the Seth Rogen/James Franco comedy The Interview. The movie, which depicts the death of North Korean dictator Kim Jong-Un, had its premiere abruptly canceled after hackers threatened to attack any movie theater which screened it — attacks that did not happen when Sony reversed course and allowed independent cinemas to screen it. The FBI later accused the hermit state of sponsoring the attacks, an allegation that North Korea kind of denied.

Although the relationship between the United States and North Korea is virtually nonexistent — the US placed a trade embargo on North Korea in 1950, and the two countries don’t have diplomatic relations — the sanctions are actually quite harsh. CNN explains them below:

Except that there's more an more evidence that North Korea had nothing to do with hacking Sony.

Putting sanctions on NK won't do anything to leadership. Since NK trades with almost no one ex-China and a few countries outside of our direct influence, sanctions are symbolic and worthless (as someone else mentioned). Likely the reason Obama did it.

I covered this before. The whole thing was a scam to promote this piece of crap movie.

Very possible. Having spent some time in Cybercom (military side of NSA), I find it incredibly hard that anyone would even think it was North Korea.

It was likely either Wildchild's speculation or a disgruntled former Sony employee.

Accusing Iraq of WMDs was plausible. North Korea being behind this is not plausible; they simply do not have the capability. I simply cannot understand why President Obama would do this; I'm sure he's been fully briefed by cyber experts on this matter.

I believe North Korea has the ability to pay an insider to do this to Sony.

Maybe Obama has also been briefed by our foreign intelligence and believes Kim is on the brink of toppling. Could be another bet that doesn't pay off, but we've done worse.

I haven't looked at their currency reserves but they sold off most of their gold reserves last year. Last I checked, they were beyond flat broke. I don't think they have enough money to pay for something this sophisticated.
