NASCAR Throws Book at Kurt Busch
There are times when common sense and reasoned judgment dictate
throwing the rulebook out the window. Instead, NASCAR chose to
throw the book at driver Kurt Busch for an infraction he could not
have avoided...
...extraneous factors such as the strength of Busch's car or his
position in the points standings should not have entered the
equation when NASCAR made its call. What should have entered the
equation are an understanding of the circumstances and a sense of
equanimity and fair play...
...if Busch had slid across the line and then re-entered the track,
would he have been penalized? Yes, says Pemberton...
...if he had continued through the pits without stopping at his
stall, would he have been penalized? Yes, says Pemberton...
...NASCAR's rule created a situation from which Busch had no escape
without penalty. The sanctioning body's get-tough policy on
intentional infractions shouldn't dictate that fair play and the
best interests of competition suffer in a situation where a driver
clearly was playing by the rules...
...Busch got zapped by a bush-league decision, and his race -- and
the Chase -- went right out the window, where the rule book should
have gone in the first place.
