GameStop soars 31% after the retailer records a surprise Q4 profit

GameStop (NYSE:GME) soared in postmarket trading after recording an unexpected profit in Q4.

Revenue fell 0.9% to $2.25B during the quarter. Hardware and accessories sales accounted for 55.8% of total sales vs. 52.7% a year ago, while software sales fell to 30.1% of the mix from 34.9% last year. Collectibles revenue was up to 14.1% of the total vs. 12.4% a year ago.

During the quarter, the Texas-based company generated $4.5M from the sale of digital assets.

Of note, GameStop (GME) recorded net income of $48.2M in Q4 vs. a net loss last year of $147.5M. The company noted that it initiated cost cutting initiatives and headcount reductions over the course of the year with an aim to increase operational efficiency.

On the balance sheet, GME ended the quarter with $1.39B in cash and inventory was at $683M vs. $915M a year ago.

Shares of GameStop (GME) gained 32.49% to $23.43 vs. the 52-week trading range of $15.41 to $49.85.
