The protests spreading across China over the government’s zero-Covid policy are worrying investors now, but analysts say they could hasten a shift away from that stringent approach, benefiting stocks in the world’s second-largest economy over the long run.
Chinese stocks sank on Monday, bringing a 4% intraday loss in Hong Kong’s HSI –1.57% Hang Seng Index, as the demonstrations cast a spotlight on the country’s troubles following weeks of optimism that Beijing was moving toward steps to heal the economy. U.S. stocks were lower as well, with a 0.8% decline in the S&P 500 SPX –1.66% as investors weighed the potential for damage to companies such as Apple (ticker: AAPL) or General Motors (GM), which rely on China for production or as a market.
