Amylyx Pharmaceuticals Inc. won regulatory approval for its controversial treatment for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, making it the third major medicine authorized in the US to slow the disease.

The treatment, to be called Relvyrio in the US, was approved despite uncertainty about its level of effectiveness in a clinical trial, the Food and Drug Administration said Thursday in a statement, but “given the serious and life-threatening nature of ALS and the substantial unmet need, this level of uncertainty is acceptable in this instance,” the agency said. The shares rose as much as 14% in trading after US markets closed.
