Fulltime trader loner?

Quote from innovest_11:

Are fulltime traders mostly loner in character? I have traded fulltime for 1.5 years, actually I have enjoyed doing all these trading alone, no more office meetings, no interaction with colleagues except my kids and spouse

Just that in longer terms , few more years down the road, I'm just wondering what kind of person I will become? Anti social? Even more of a loner? Any other Side effects since most of time trading is a lonely job without any interaction with colleagues, minimal human interactions

Any fulltime over 5 years traders care to comment ? Thanks in advance

Socially well adjusted person makes friends all the time, at the gym, golf course, kids sporting events, on vacations, friends of friends, your neighbours, your wife's friends husbands etc.. It sounds like you may have a reserved personality.

well hell, if you can do that, why not just be a broker or a salesman?

like the first time I tried to set up shop in a remote brokerage

and the other broker told me, "I belong to every gym, every country club, every church, and every social club."

Quote from Ghost of Cutten:

I think there are other major disadvantages to working alone, the main one being lack of an external checks on your mistakes, oversights, and deterioration in discipline - 2 minds are better than 1. Also, someone else who is enthusiastic about work, makes you more enthusiastic about work. Anyone working solo is going to be at a huge competitive disadvantage to someone working with a smart, motivated colleague.

So, if you are a very disciplined loner, and happy to chug along earning your keep without ever getting close to realising your full potential, then trading solo may be for you.

+1

like we had a broker in the office, and he was a real bear, couldn't even go long unless he shorted puts, but he couldn't put anything on unless he got somebody to go in on it with him

definitely not a loner

I worked solo for years and became less anti-social. You can get your human interaction through social life - put in some effort there and there is no reason you should turn into a hermit. However, I think there are other major disadvantages to working alone, the main one being lack of an external checks on your mistakes, oversights, and deterioration in discipline - 2 minds are better than 1. To summarise;

1) if you are incapable of checking your own work,
2) if you lack attention to detail,
3) if you are a weak, indisciplined character,
4)if you need someone else to motivate you to do your best work,

You would be best advised not to work alone.

What if you are none of the above?

I get that you are describing your failings. Please don't insult the rest of us.

I don't think he is trying to insult anyone - He is describing what he has learned from his personal experience. If you disagree, fine. Tell us more about what you have learned, rather than assume something negative about someone else - a poster who in just the past week has added some extremely valuable insight to this site.

He has a weak dependent personality and assumes everyone else is like him.

If he has added valuable insight, that's wonderful. That's not what we are discussing here.

Justrading, why are you commenting on this forum if you don't care what other people think?

You, through your own words and attitude, are proving the very points you're trying to dispute.

You are influenced by others and you depend on that influence, otherwise you wouldn't be here.
