Here in the Chicago area the temperature can swing 40 to 50 degrees in one day. If this had never happened before, or if it only happened once every few hundred years there might be a cause for concern. However, it happens several times a year, every year, year after year. Decade after decade. Century after century. Local extremes are no different than global extremes. Historical, predictable extremes tell us nothing. When it happens we don't fear the end of the world, we simply accept that there can be temperature extremes on occasion. We call that normal.
