the same goes for domestic aid like welfare and food stamps
More than 50% of the people on food stamps work. 15% of Walmart employees, and 2% of the military are on food stamps. What do you suggest that the working poor do?

Most people will abuse help and free things, they take it for granted. -- People should be forced to work, or have some skin in the game of some sort.
Nothing should be totally free. The lifeblood of everything in this world is time, and physical and mental energy and money.

Surely a significant benefit of foreign aid (to the donor) is political leverage over the recipient country?

Cynical, may even prolong poverty, but could be worth it in some circumstances.

Funnily enough they focus on Afghanistan where many actually do need the money.

Meanwhile the US is dumping billions and billions into Israel, a first world country with a healthy economy.
The old excuse is "they are surrounded by enemies". Garbage, if that is the standard then all the money should go to Finland or the Baltics as Russia is a far more militarily dangerous country than Syria, Lebanon, Palestine, Egypt and Iran combined.
Israelis have engineered it well though as almost no Americans talk about it and when they do, they actually find ways to justify it. It's their tax dollars being taken and spread in Israel to people who don't actually need it.

Exactly what I mean. It seems worthwhile (for the US government) to meet the cost of the military aid to Israel in order to have a militarily strong Israel. A militarily strong Israel also means greater military spending by the surrounding Arab countries and their allies, which might be another benefit to the US. Nothing is for nothing.
