Florida’s Teacher of the Year Bluntly Writes WHY School Violence Is Out of Control

HANG ON A MOMENT HERE.. I was busy today and sensed something smelled a bit.

She was named teacher of the year ONLY at her own school in Florida it seems? She is a teacher of the year of hundreds/thousands I'm sure, in Florida.

She is not Florida's teacher of the year which is a real thing:

Is this correct?

Not even a regional winner.

I expect it is. Most schools nominate a teacher of the year. The school district (sometimes county-wide) selects one of the nominees for their single teacher of the year. Out of this pool of district teacher of the year -- which goes up to a region -- -- the state selects a teacher of the year out of this pool of district / region winners.

I am told that Florida operates similar to North Carolina in regards to "teacher of the year".

Please recognize that even being selected as the teacher of the year at your school is a significant honor.

I call bullshit on you. I hunt waterfowl and although I use a Remington 870 pump, most other guys use a Browning Semi Auto shotgun.

Tell your "friends" that they are no hunters if they are using semiautomatics!!! I mean that seriously. There is absolutely no reason to ever use a semiautomatic for hunting. You at least use a pump. I'd find a better group of friends if I were you. Personally, I'd be embarrassed to be hunting with anyone using a semi-automatic. To me that's almost as bad as shooting ducks on the water, or quail before they take flight. What is the matter with you guys? Has sportsmanship just gone out the window?!

Nice. Constitutional argument you got going there. OR NOT. And I presume the same goes for skeet shooting. The 2nd amendment does not protect the right to own a semi-auto shotgun to shoot skeet because you prefer a double or a pump. Got it. I am sure your name is mentioned somewhere in the Federalist Papers.

So the veracity of her post is subject to her "Teacher of the Year" award?

She hit the nail on the head in my opinion.

The problem here is FOX and others went with she was Florida's teacher of the year.

As in the winner of the state wide thing that is a real competition. She is just a teacher from a school, not a super teacher with special wisdom or Mary Poppins superpowers.Unless I am wrong?

Deception by intent, scummy crappy behavior and typical of right wing outlets.

Anyway, she grew up in a military family and nobody was a psychopath or mentally screwed up. America & the world is full of messed up broken kids who did not have the benefit of the Waltons as role models.

There is a problem NOW, this day this week that requires an intelligent national emergency response, not everyone should love their kids and hope.

1% of males are psychopaths, that is accepted. Hare who developed the famous test concluded about 5-7% were partial psychopaths. No/little empathy but they can pretend.

I have a military background, I know how strict things are. Civilians don't have that and they have equivalent weapons, actually they have unlimited ammo so they have way more, they are not accounting for every round.

The NRA is a monstrosity because Wayne is a psychopath plus the usual mix of talents that allow guys like him to fool people. He is not a real boy, only fakes it and should have been removed a long time back.

While he is leading the NRA is a cult as much as a rational organisation.

A gun safety organisation that is funded by gun manufacturers? You know the opoid epidemic? This is the same type of deal with drug companies. It is about profit not the 2nd amendment.

To be fair --- if you go read the lady's Facebook post she never claimed to be teacher of the year. All of that was put in place by various media outlets. She was teacher of the year at her middle school.

"Kelly Guthrie Raley, 41, was named Eustis Middle School Teacher of the Year last month and has spoken out in a now-viral Facebook post following the mass shooting that killed 17 at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School."

Here is her Facebook post...
---------------------------
Okay, I’ll be the bad guy and say what no one else is brave enough to say, but wants to say. I’ll take all the criticism and attacks from everyone because you know what? I’m a TEACHER. I live this life daily. And I wouldn’t do anything else! But I also know daily I could end up in an active shooter situation.

Until we, as a country, are willing to get serious and talk about mental health issues, lack of available care for the mental health issues, lack of discipline in the home, horrendous lack of parental support when the schools are trying to control horrible behavior at school (oh no! Not MY KID. What did YOU do to cause my kid to react that way?), lack of moral values, and yes, I’ll say it-violent video games that take away all sensitivity to ANY compassion for others’ lives, as well as reality TV that makes it commonplace for people to constantly scream up in each others’ faces and not value any other person but themselves, we will have a gun problem in school. Our kids don’t understand the permanency of death anymore!!!

I grew up with guns. Everyone knows that. But you know what? My parents NEVER supported any bad behavior from me. I was terrified of doing something bad at school, as I would have not had a life until I corrected the problem and straightened my ass out.

My parents invaded my life. They knew where I was ALL the time. They made me have a curfew. They made me wake them up when I got home. They made me respect their rules. They had full control of their house, and at any time could and would go through every inch of my bedroom, backpack, pockets, anything!

Parents: it’s time to STEP UP! Be the parent that actually gives a cr**! Be the annoying mom that pries and knows what your kid is doing. STOP being their friend. They have enough “friends” at school. Be their parent. Being the “cool mom” means not a damn thing when either your kid is dead or your kid kills other people because they were allowed to have their space and privacy in YOUR HOME.

I’ll say it again. My home was filled with guns growing up. For God’s sake, my daddy was an 82nd Airborne Ranger who lost half his face serving our country. But you know what? I never dreamed of shooting anyone with his guns. I never dreamed of taking one! I was taught respect for human life, compassion, rules, common decency, and most of all, I was taught that until I moved out, my life and bedroom wasn’t mine...it was theirs. And they were going to know what was happening because they loved me and wanted the best for me.

There. Say that I’m a horrible person. I didn’t bring up gun control, and I will refuse to debate it with anyone. This post wasn’t about gun control. This was me, loving the cr** out of people and wanting the best for them. This was about my school babies and knowing that God created each one for greatness, and just wanting them to reach their futures.

It’s about 20 years ago this year I started my teaching career. Violence was not this bad 20 years ago. Lack of compassion wasn’t this bad 20 years ago. And God knows 20 years ago that I wasn’t afraid daily to call a parent because I KNEW that 9 out of 10 would cuss me out, tell me to go to Hell, call the news on me, call the school board on me, or post all over Facebook about me because I called to let them know what their child chose to do at school...because they are a NORMAL kid!!!!!

Those 17 lives mattered. When are we going to take our own responsibility seriously?

Your focus is on her awarded title and not the wisdom of a person who has taught for 20 years, and the error is your perception of what was written.

"Kelly Guthrie Raley has been teaching for 20 years and currently educates at Eustis Middle School in Lake County, Florida. Just last month she was named the 2017-2018 Teacher of the Year."

It doesn't read Florida's or National Teacher of the Year, the context of the statement was on Eustis Middle School.

You marginalized her upbringing by concerned parents in a stable home which is the problem she's addressing. The majority of kids growing up today don't have that.

The problem isn't guns, it's a society and culture that has replaced the traditional Father/Mother/Child relationship with a myriad of dysfunctional parings and alternate lifestyles that are deemed "valid" by the progressive tolerant community.

When there isn't a "Father" or a "Mother" in a relationship, that needed parental puzzle piece is replaced with "something" by the child as they grow up, usually with negative consequences. When parenting duties are replaced with the TV, or handed over to the state, there's negative consequences. When parents quit parenting there's negative consequences.

That being said, there's multitudes of people in broken relationships, lost loved ones trying to raise their kids as best get can, and doing a good job. This World can be hard. But the farther we stray from the "Walton's" the worse things become.

NO.

I am sure/hope being from a military family she was horrified at the misrepresentation as she would understand the ethics of stolen valor. Not her fault but it was sleazy for FOX and the TITLE OF THIS THREAD.

I read her post. Fine and it must be backed by tackling the poison of the NRA who is as ethical as the drug companies selling opiates, it is about profit and personal power (more important) to a few psychos at the top.

ARs age restricted, handguns also ideally. Then we can kiss the world better.

I could be wrong here, but I believe it is only a small minority of the population that wants to get rid of guns entirely. Do you have any data on this. I have been lazy and haven't searched for it.

I'm a classical libertarian, definitely not a neo-libertarian, so naturally I believe in as little government interference with our lives as possible, consistent with maintaining both public order and our individual freedoms. Scalia's argument in Heller v. D.C. convinced me that the right to own firearms is an inalienable right. In other words, it exists whether or not there is a second amendment. But Scalia also argued that this right does not prevent the government from putting reasonable restrictions on the types of fire arms that one can own. Nor does the second amendment preclude those restrictions. In other words, according to the majority opinion in Heller, the right to own and use firearms it is not a right without limitation.

Government banning of semiautomatic firearms, for example, would not violate either our inalienable right, or the Second Amendment. A Government requirement that all firearms be registered in a national registry would not violate these rights. Universal consistent background checks and waiting periods in all fifty States would not violate these rights. If the gun lobby refuses to step up, suggest and support reasonable and effective controls-- the forgoing is where we are headed. Frankly, the NRA has no credibility among the general public, and for good reasons.

Would this include my old Sears model 25, 22 caliber semi?

It's such a fearsome weapon.... If you're a squirrel perhaps.
