Finally amazon mandating a return to work 5 days policy!!

I have a friend new to AMZN development. I advised him to get an apartment near the office, and go in every day. After 1 year he is WAY ahead of the other new hires. Works with the senior engineers, leads and principles, and all the people who work on a war footing. Most of the other new hires are treating work like a continuation of school. Trying to just do a job in the most convenient way. Amazon is in an economic war. I guess some people just are not that serious.

Upon his 1 year review he figures he is 6 months ahead of those coming in 3 days a week. He has double the responsibilities, and has submitted way more code than those who are WFH. He will be easily be a millionaire by 30 with a good shot at a dec-millionaire by 40.

You reap what you sow.

I doubt that from a salary job. Even if you make 250k per year it would take atleast a decade to save 1M dollars... probably longer. Stocks, crypto and real estate are the only avenues to riches.

I'm not talking about teams working overseas autonomously. I'm talking about me commuting to the office to seat on a meeting with developers working from around the world remotely. How do you justify such set up?

the cost differential might offset the lost productivity

Finally amazon mandating back to work in the office 5 days a week, but seems like employees are already crying and bitching about it.
It's time to go back to the office like real grown up, enough of the work from home in your pjs nonsense....
Amazon doing the right thing and I hope thousands of other companies implement this same mandate very soon!!!

Amazon employees blast Andy Jassy’s RTO mandate: ‘I’d rather go back to school than work in an office again’

Certainly from your posts you are an expert on "crying and bitching". Unfortunately, you know not nearly enough about remote work, stock markets, and the economy. Not sure why you keep posting so much on those topics on here.

why a decade? you get paid and put $ in SPY (depending on age). you get a million quicker

Well I'm just saying by saving money you're not going to get there. You have to invest it somewhere and most people aren't very adept at investing, more like a GIC or something.

Who saves cash...making nothing? Isn't the phrase asset rich cash poor

He who has leverage has power, that simple.

My wife's in corporate sales and works from home while most others in her group are back in the office. She outperforms, so no one is going to question her work ethics and work arrangements. Even if in her 50s, she could get another job before the end of the day.

There's value in working with a group of people in an office, the most important of which is socializing and building relationships, which are real important for junior and mid management layers. It's important for senior management to know the people who work for them, not just the work done but the overall individual, for promotion consideration.

On the other hand, for many (not all) it's a significant perk to be able to work from home and those with the right work ethics likely outperform themselves (many studies show it). I couldn't work from home because I get too easily distracted.

I believe the stay at home movement has such a profound socio economic impact that government is quietly but actively encouraging large corporate employers to press their staff to return to the office. Population density is absolutely key to urban renewal and economies of scale from an resource optimization perspective, and lots of pre covid projects came to screeching halt when cities lost their population. Suburbia is the most grotesque form of individualism.

Old stock-in-the-mud types like S2007S like the idea of trying to repress the freedom of others because of petty jealousies mostly. What you've said is true recognizing that with today's technologies a ton of jobs can now be done remotely and effectively. Those with the skills and track record name their tune in today's economy.
