I have a friend new to AMZN development. I advised him to get an apartment near the office, and go in every day. After 1 year he is WAY ahead of the other new hires. Works with the senior engineers, leads and principles, and all the people who work on a war footing. Most of the other new hires are treating work like a continuation of school. Trying to just do a job in the most convenient way. Amazon is in an economic war. I guess some people just are not that serious.

Upon his 1 year review he figures he is 6 months ahead of those coming in 3 days a week. He has double the responsibilities, and has submitted way more code than those who are WFH. He will be easily be a millionaire by 30 with a good shot at a dec-millionaire by 40.

That's where it's headed. Your friend did the absolute best choice by making his strides in the right direction. Amazon is doing the right thing by bringing everyone back. Some companies are now noticing they are falling behind the competition by having this only work from home vibe. They are finally seeing that this isn't working out too well.

This must only be for the customer service aspect...unless I am mistaken and people were controlling the drones and robots from home? With all the technology now that provides for working from home, working in an office is antiquated thinking. Wasted space. Turn it into condos and amzn retail stores instead.

In that case, they should stop hiring Overseas. There is not a single US Tech company that doesn’t have teams working from India, Asia, Europe, Latham. It’s just political bs. Leave people as little choice as possible.

teams working together in an office overseas is different than 5 guys working out of their houses walking their dogs and punting on spx futures during meetings.

People don't take into consideration the costs and time for commuting and depreciation on your vehicle as well as risks and stress associated with just being out on the highways.

I would tell them to go shove it.

I'm not talking about teams working overseas autonomously. I'm talking about me commuting to the office to seat on a meeting with developers working from around the world remotely. How do you justify such set up?

If they want to cut costs then maybe cut some of the fat off inflated corporate salaries.

It's times like this that I agree with the Swedish model where everybody gets a base wage that they can survive on whether working or not, so companies can't essentially hold people hostage.

I just looked it up and in Canada, it illegal for a company to force a worker to relocate.

Seriously your take on this is absolute crap in today's economy. The most successful young person I know went 100% remote work after year one of their career at a time when very few had taken that path. It's worked out extremely well in terms of money, industry contacts, and a wealth of opportunities. It is a shame that you feel the need to suggest a highly restrictive conservative approach to a career is the only way to go.
