Evolution of the Stock Market

Hi everyone,

Hopefully you can help me out here by adding/fixing this list. I have a huge college project due and part of it is to figure out what technologies changed the way people invest/trade since the stock market opened.

Please see list below and if you can help out with this it would be greatly appreciated.

1903 - NYSE Opened (Orders placed by tickets)

1971 - Nasdaq opened and electronic trading started

1980's - Stock brokers took orders over the phone

1996 - Real-time ticker introduced, people started trading from home on computers

2009 - High frequency trading evolved

2011 - iPhone trading/investing technologies

Major technologies that changed the way the world trades/invests, am I missing anything?

basically the evolution aims to milk more and more money from retail investors.

another important timeline is the introduction of public APIs. Introduces a whole new world of trading, yet not many brokers are offering API access.
 
I think two major technological events changed the way people trade during the last decades: The Internet (so millions of people can trade online almost 24h a day) and the ever-growing processing power of modern computers and high-speed telecommunication devices.

Yes, but it's more a software innovation than a real technological change, so to speak.
 
Yes the technological advancements that change the way the everyday person makes investment and trading decisions. Something that everyone would remember as major events in history ?

Add the program trading revolution and portfolio insurance circa 1987. Add mutual funds rise and ETFs rise. Also track the change in market participants. Most trading used to be done by individuals decades ago and now most is institutions and they swamp results because each group trades in a different manner ( for good reasons).

Surely possible for someone to call their broker and place an order before 1980? Weren't people doing that from day one of the telephone (~1880)?

Also, what about the telegraph/telegrams, transatlantic cable (for GBP/USD) and ticker tape?

I forget where I saw it, but some guy (possibly well known) made his own iPad-like device in the 1980s for trading on the floor. I believe it was wireless, displayed real-time quotes and had a touch screen!

maybe not technologies as such.....but they certainly changed how people invest

It was IB's founder, Thomas Peterffy. He used the device on the options floor in 1983.
