Evolution of the Stock Market

Surely possible for someone to call their broker and place an order before 1980? Weren't people doing that from day one of the telephone (~1880)?

Also, what about the telegraph/telegrams, transatlantic cable (for GBP/USD) and ticker tape?

I think the NYSE opened around 1791, not 1903.

I'm pretty sure the telegraph was used extensively from the 1860s to 1950s.
Phone usage slowly became more pervasive from the 1900s to the 1960s, and was dominant until 2000 or so...

Regarding electronic trading, you can do research on:

Nasdaq
SOES bandits
Globex
ECBOT
Island
Arca

You should also touch upon options trading and discount brokerages in the 1970s, as well as the launch of index and financial futures in the 1980s

Hey Everyone,

just to get you up to date with everything as a video animator I decided to make "Evolution of the Stock Market" a video clip for my class project and want to make it fun and intriguing. By doing this I want to attach a movie scene or popular clip that relates to the time certain technological events occurred causing people to change the way they invest/trade.

What are your thoughts so far?

1903 - NYSE Opens ticker orders

1970s - Electronic Trading Emerges

1980s - Stock Brokers

1990s - Online Trading from home Emerges

2000s - High Frequency Trading

2010+ - Mobile Investing/Trading

Can you suggest any good trader/investor video clips that would go great for these time frames listed above? Once I am finished with the clip will share with everyone.

Thanks
