it's not trrue, he's probably subscribing to one of the services that broadcast from the pit (over the internet)
I subscribed to trade the news or trader's audio (I can't remember which one) and they have live calls right from the S&P pit in Chicago. The announcers constantly update (every couple of seconds) bid and ask in the pits and the size traded and whether it's just locals trying to scalp a couple of ticks in a dull market, or something else
The announcers can see the big desks located along the outside of the pit.
It's actually pretty exciting when they see a big order get signalled in.
sounds like this, and the announcer's relly get excited when they get to report size...
"... uh-oh,
now Goldman's coming with size.
Goldman, Hitting the bid with size
50 go at even
another 50 at .75. "
etc
And you can hear the pit traders start yelling. It's real life, pretty interesting, I think it was like $200/month. (I don't really remember what I paid.)
