Hawaiians are the most rabid progressives out there. They do not want the tourists but, take the monies of tourists? They believe in having your cake and eat it too. Truth be told, Hawaii is an overpriced tourist destination. From airfare tickets, hotels, restaurants, etc. You are paying top dollar with the locals having no appreciation for the monies you spend in Hawaii. As more Americans move abroad to lift their standard of living, they will know how badly, they have been conned. Do your research and try living abroad before you decide where to live. Thailand, Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore. There are houses in Indonesia in resorts you can rent for $300-$400 a month, furnished. The beaches in those resorts comparable or even way better than that in Hawaii.
