Downloading Music

Quote from steamroller:
mega-miliionaire teenager

So then, no stealing from poor musicians, we limit our downloads to Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake. If that doesn't put an end to P2P, nothing will.

I tried that 'civil disobedience' line once, but the cops made me give back the Rolex anyway.

Quote from steamroller:
99 percent of what I download I wouldn't have bought, so they didn't miss out on an opportunity cost loss anyway.

I don't plan to purchase a Lexus, should I steal one? It's not like Toyota was going to see any of my money anyway.

Interesting - thanks for the info. I am tempted, but here is their disclaimer:

"Users are responsible for any usage and distribution of all materials received from AllOFMP3.com. This responsibility depends on the local legislation of each user's country of residence. AllOFMP3.com's Administration does not keep up with the laws of different countries and is not responsible the actions of non-Russian users."

So far as I can tell, RIAA has not addressed its existence.

IMO (not a lawyer, but know a few), a US user would be considered an "innocent infringer" and not really subject to any penalty unless you are put on notice that your activities violate US copyright law. In addition, allofmp3's activities seem to be in the realm of international law that is subject to treaties/conventions.

Take a look at:

They also have a number of free albums available, list at:

I don't disagree - but, the law has come down hard on people sharing and file swapping. Have you not seen the news over the past few years?

what are you talking about? more people are sharing everyday. you should check out what goes on in some of the irc rooms. come down hard? not even close. It's just the beginning imho.

Whatever. What is your point? I started this thread to find out legal alternatives for myself because I did not want to take the risk anymore.

Thanks for the info - now I am tempted again.

I think you just made Newtoat's point Dax...he is concerned that this IS just the beginning of the enforcement and he is looking for legal alternatives.

seems like nobody answered the original question about where to download songs for free.

I have a site name where to do this.....

send me $10 via paypal and I will give you the low down. You will never pay for another song again. PM me if there are any questions.

Payment is voluntary; music, movies and software are not staples like food or shelter, you can survive without them. Downloading the latest Liberace disc or version of Windows is not analogous to stealing a loaf of bread to feed your starving family.
It does if you need it and don't have the money! :D

The market has set the value of that artist's work, your personal views on the quality of that work are irrelevant. Just because you feel that the market has overvalued that work doesn't give you the right to take it without compensation.
It does if I can get away with it! :D

I don't give a flying rats ass if a mega-miliionaire teenager loses a few bucks because some impoverished grad student or 60 hour-per-week carpenter or minimum wage walmart employee takes what is given on a p2p network. The kid will make more money by doing one 30 second commercial that took 4 hours to make that most people earn in a year.

This country is totally bass akwards in it's priorities. Cops, firemen, teachers, and scientists struggle while sports, movie, and music practitioners consume the wealth. Whose fault is it? It is the fault of the cops, firemen, teachers and scientist who are willing to pay the bloated ticket or cd prices.

In this pirates opinion, a little civil disobedience isn't a bad thing. 99 percent of what I download I wouldn't have bought, so they didn't miss out on an opportunity cost loss anyway.

That's the way I see it. The rich can afford to buy CDs/Movies/Software.

It is the rest of the population (99%) who should be entitled to share whatever they want.

After all, it is the poor slobs that keep the rich getting richer.

The ungracious artists who get paid on every CD, etc., bought or seen, shouldn't make such a big deal of it.

It's like readers of my thread/posts emailing them to their friends. You think I'd like to CHARGE for them doing that??

Yes. :D
