Don't run over cops and you won't get shot

The Pasquotank County DA held a press conference with the results of the State Bureau Investigation (SBI) into the shooting of Andrew Brown by police. The press conference included video of Brown attempting to run over police before they opened fire.

For some background: Andrew Brown is a violent felon with a 180 page criminal record.

Bottom Line: The shooting is completely justified

No Pasquotank County deputy will face criminal charges in the fatal shooting last month of an Elizabeth City man, the district attorney announced Tuesday, ruling that the shooting was justified.

Andrew Brown Jr., 42, was shot by deputies trying to arrest him on drug charges and to serve a warrant to search his home and car on April 21. Authorities said he had a history of resisting arrest, so several deputies went to his home.

"The facts of this case clearly illustrate the officers who used deadly force on Andrew Brown Jr. did so reasonably and only when a violent felon used a deadly weapon to place their lives in danger," District Attorney Andrew Womble said during a news conference.

Investigator Daniel Meads, Deputy Robert Morgan and Cpl. Aaron Lewellyn have been on leave since the shooting, pending the outcome of the State Bureau of Investigation review of the incident that Womble used to reach his decision.

Womble gave a detailed account of the incident and even showed video clips from different body-worn cameras in use that morning to explain his decision.

The videos showed that the deputies surrounded Brown's BMW outside his Perry Street home and yelled at him to show his hands. He then backed up and drove off through a vacant lot next door and deputies opened fire.

Sgt. Joel Lunsford, who was part of the detail sent to arrest Brown, was trying to open the driver's door and was almost hit by the BMW as Brown backed up, Womble said. He was then almost hit again as Brown drove away, the prosecutor said.

Meads fired the first shot into the BMW windshield as Brown advanced, Womble said. A fusillade of other shots could be heard on the video as the car drove away. The car then crashed into a tree down the street.

Investigators recovered 14 shell casings from Brown's driveway and the vacant lot, Womble said. An autopsy determined that Brown had been shot twice, once in the right arm and once in the back of the head, he said.

Lt. Steven Judd, Sgt. Michael Swindell, Sgt. Kenneth Bishop also were involved in the attempt to arrest Brown, but none of them nor Lunsford fired a weapon during the incident, according to Pasquotank County Sheriff Tommy Wooten. Dare County Sheriff's Office investigators also were at the scene, Womble said, but they were parked down the street in an unmarked vehicle.

So, there is more of a problem here than don’t run over cops. Yes, in that situation because America has so many guns our law enforcement has to take a neutralizing approach to criminal apprehensions. For the record, this is not a normal law enforcement approach in most other countries because they don’t have to factor in danger to the community in a fleeing suspect the way we do because of the gun situation.

Now, this particular incident is a police failure of planning very much like the middle of the night no knock warrant in the Breanna Taylor killing.

The law enforcement failure was they chose to execute an arrest warrant on a suspect in the drivers seat of an operational car. They created a situation that was basically a coin flip in that the suspect would try to flee.

Whoever gave the order to execute the warrant in that situation failed to take into account the safety of the officers and the suspect. That warrant should have been executed in a much more favorable manner for both the officers and the suspect.

The leftist crime fighting plan is that when a violent criminal resists or runs the police must let him go. That way he can get right back into the community committing more violent crimes. Another solution brought to you by the party of intellectuals.:banghead:

The thread is about blacks being shot by the police. I watched enough of the trial to know that George Floyd was not shot by police. As a side point, he likely died due to his self destructive behavior.
Is that why Derek Chauvin was charged with murder?

Well the police have the legal right to neutralize a fleeing suspect they have reason to believe is a threat to the community. I addressed that this is basically a uniquely American problem because of the a availability of guns in America. In most other countries law enforcement takes a corralling approach to fleeing or resisting suspects because they don’t have the immediate threat of guns.
