geez.. i hate being right about cryer winning and haroki being wrong and chickening out of his radio show:

The two counts he was being prosecuted on was WILLFUL failure to file a return. It is entirely possible that Cryer came off as such a loon that the jury figured there was no way in Hell he could willfully do anything and that he just forgot/didn't get around to it/dog ate it.
The government dropped the tax evasion charge prior to the trial and I suppose they could revisit it and refile charges on that count. And that may have been part of their strategy. Why tie the evasion case to a case that had a higher likelyhood of failure.
Until notice is received the government has no intent of refiling the evasion charge, don't celebrate too much.

Becraft knows the limits of the Cheek defense and he can present it and coach his clients better than anyone. But he does nothing to quash these illusions in the tax nut community that Cheek goes anywhere but nowhere in the overall scheme of things. He just sits back and defends these nutjobs who have ruined their lives financially and otherwise.
On the other hand, Cryer is a fully immersed koolaid drinker. He ended the interview with "they can't show us the law" crap. He will be on the seminar trail taking the "donations" (cash only, of course).

It's really a great racket: Convince the TPs that they don't have to pay, watch them get indicted, the few with money hire you to represent them, you charge a big fee which you receive whether you win or not, if you lose no big deal these people were guilty anyway, but if you win then great advertising.
All the while, you pay your own taxes so that Los Federales don't come after you.

Ontopic: I listened to the Brown radio show and Ed's sour grapes about Tommy's win were priceless. "It's not fair."

In short, it was a closed environment, a tightly controlled play of words composed of ALL fictional persons, who have sold their souls to the Government Corporation and its Courts.
Tommy's victory won't get much play on the Brown situation. They're already trashing it on the Quest blog:

At the option of the DOJ, he can be prosecuted for any years not covered in the indictment for which the DOJ might contend he has willfully failed to timely file returns or to timely pay tax.
And, at the expense of sounding tiresome to our tax protester friends, we remind them that the gross amount of compensation received or constructively received for personal services is includible in gross income under section 61 and is taxable. Mr. Cryer unfortunately still has the obligation to pay the FEDERAL INCOME TAXES for the years in question, plus penalties and interest (by one count, over $73,000 and growing).
