Do NOT Take Vitamins

Quote from Optionspoet:

I wipe my ass with these studies.

how about this one; the death toll from eating meat is 99% because most those who eat meat have shown to die in their 80s, vegetarians on the other hand live some 10,000 years

first off everyone dies, and usually it is very hard to blame ones death or age of death on a specific object or subject, though a smaller percentage of the population do die of clear cases like car accidents

second, everything has it's pros and cons, there is really nothing perfect in this universe, sucks doesn't it?! but that's the way it is, and I am sure fruits have their own cons too, it's just a matter of which ones pros outweighs it's cons and by what factor, and I bet it would be almost impossible to find a decent article that does compare them properly, plus we don't even have sufficient knowledge and technology to do so, and also I am sure it would change from person to person

From my perspective, and i admit that i am a prisoner of my education, i think that in general it would not be true that the "effects of vitamins in the body depend on other ingredients of fruits, etc." In fact it seems highly unlikely. However, I can see a case being made for what you consume with vitamins affecting their absorbtion. Perhaps that is what you meant.

Certainly, eating an orange or drinking a glass of orange juice is more enjoyable then swallowing a tablet. On the other hand the tablet is going to give you a lot more Vitamin C than a few oranges. One 500 mg tablet is about equivalent to 7 eight-ounce glasses of juice.

You are incorrect. There is little credible evidence that vitamin supplements do what has been claimed. But those in fruits and vegetables generally have a MUCH higher bioavailability, and are linked with the health benefits that supplements do not seem to offer.

Secondly, things like Beta-Carotene, is one of over a hundred different carotenoids. The interaction and the effect of many things in produce are still poorly understood. We are closer to the beginning of understanding the effects of these that to the end.

Thirdly, megadosing may be harmful (like high amounts of C). It is not just about dosing your body with high amounts, since that is not how we evolved. Often, some things work in tandem, like phosphorus, Vitamin D, calcium, potassium, magnesium and others. Too much of one thing may suppres the availability of another. We understand little...

Pick any vitamin and do a pubmed search on it. You will find reams of evidence that it works also reams of evidence that support your view also. Back in the day I was a study junkie and concluded that the evidence shows that some supplements do work as claimed and some don't. They are just beginning to understand how supplements work and still have a very long way to go. In my opinion it's too early to make blanket statements that all supplements do not work.
Take IP6 for example and the cancer fighting effects it has. The studies on vitamin D also show strong cancer fighting effects on colon cancer. Fish oil is another supplement that has many health benefits.

Correct. In other words, evidence that vitamin supplements help is mixed, at best. And shortens lifespan in several cases. In fact, men with the highest iron in their bloodstreams live much shorter/ have more heart problems. Fruits and vegetables have much better records under nutritional testing.

Take IP6 for example and the cancer fighting effects it has.

That is not a vitamin

Yes - and some more sunshine is all someone needs. We don't get enough because we stay indoors during cold weather, slather ourselves with sunscreen, and sit in the shade during hot weather

Fish oil is another supplement that has many health benefits.

That is not a vitamin

What are you one of those guys who have to argue everything? This isn't politics or religion.

Folate is good for you as are other b VITAMINS with little or no negative side effects and no proof or evidence that I've read that they shorten life or even harmful, take your folate! Same with vitamin C and the other water soluble VITAMINS.

FYI iron isn't a vitamin either. But since you mentioned minerals take your magnesium also.

Seems to me that I was responding to your disagreement with my post "In my opinion it's too early to make blanket statements that all supplements do not work." etc. etc.

Do you take responses personally? Then you don't belong on a forum. By and large, supplements are a waste of time. I am also a research junkie. I have a bachelor's in biology and study nutrition broadly. I doubt you exceed this, And I can tell you that the consensus view from many studies is, that it is much better to get your nutrients from food, and not from supplements.

I didn't mention "water-soluble vitamins, did I? As to some of the research on the problems of supplements: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/6399773.stm
