2 way street. Low wage or people just not willing to compete because its below them? Neither is likely the answer, somewhere in the middle probably is.
The problem with Canada for new comers is cost of living expense. If you're not from a major canadian city you wouldn't understand $500+ per sq ft. , 13% sales tax, $300 heating bills, $5+ for gallon of gas. Any low wage earner is gov subsidized one way or another, the uneducated may never contribute, and a burden on the system.
I dont think its a matter of people not being willing to compete because its below them, i think its a matter of people not being willing to work there because its not worth their time. (unless you are a highschool, or university kid just looking for spare work) The only way these low skilled placess like McDicks can keep paying wages low enough that it is impossible to live off of is if you keep flooding the labor market with unneccessary supply of laborers.
It is basic economic laws of supply and demand in my opinion, there will be more than enough people willing to do it if the price is high enough, hell if mcdonalds was paying 100k a year id probably go back there, lol. So its not that we have a lack of laborers, its that we have a lack of people willing to work for a wage that is so low it is almost impossible to live off of.
There would be more than enough demand for these jobs if wages were to double, we are not facing a shortage of laborers, we are facing a shortage of laborers willing to work for shit wages, and the only way you can keep paying shit wages is by continuing to flood the country with immigrants who will work for them.
I mean come on, what justification do places like McDonalds have for pushing for temporary foreign work permits other than the fact that they want to pay people the lowest wages possible, i called myself a McMonkey earlier, cause the job is so retardedly simple a monkey could probably do it, and within the next 5-10 years a computer will do it. Its not like we are talking about Silicon Valley here, where there is only a certain number of people in the world who posess the skills necessary to do alot of those jobs.
