So, this thread is about Russia not obfuscation and conflating.

You posed the theory that Trump is using Russia as a weapon against the EU. Then you stated it is a bad idea to use Russia as a weapon against the EU. Of course this correct.

The EU is not our enemy and Russia is not our ally. Empowering Russia, our enemy, and weakening the EU, our allies, is bad for American interests. Those interests being democracy and freedom.

Trump had a perfect opportunity today to frame Putin correctly as the international thug and pariah that he is - and instead he deflected that narrative in order to create some sort of bizarre twilight zone ‘congeniality’(?) between the US and Russia.

And this just months after Mattis decimated 200-300 Russian mercenaries KIA in Syria with gunships and Marine Corps HIMARS trying to assault a clearly demarcated US position.

Again I am guessing and I have no way of explaining it. The only logic I can personally see in it is that 1. Trump will never cede one scintilla of anything election-related to the Democrats or to the DOJ/FBI executive managers, and/or 2. Trump truly believes that the EU trade policies towards the US are a greater threat to the US national interest than anything Russia has done to us lately. And I have no reason to doubt that Trump is sincere in his own held belief when he says that EU/NATO Defense is too heavily subsidized by the US and that the US doesn’t gain enough to justify that subsidy.

But I for one cannot know and in this regard I will not make excuses for him. I don’t think the answer is so simplistic that Russia has some sort of leverage or ‘dirty laundry’ on Trump per se. If Russia does it’s not working well for them because the August 2017 sanctions that Trump signed into law hit the Russian defense and energy sectors very hard and that bill limited Trump’s executive power to unilaterally ease them. And Mattis apparently has enough discretion with military assets to destroy Russian proxies. Killing Russian mercenaries wholesale is no small matter.

I believe that children of politicians and entertainers who are under the age of 18 should be afforded some privacy and not subject to public ridicule - whether they are children of Donald Trump or of Barack Obama.
