South Americans -with a handful of exceptions- are not eligible for asylum in the U.S under international law. They are required to request asylum in Mexico if heading north. If they want to bypass Mexico and request entry into the U.S , they then become economic migrants rather than asylum seekers- so the "fear of death" aspect is not a factor unless requesting asylum- which- in case you missed it the first time- needs to be in Mexico- not the U.S.
In the highly unlikely event that their claim is not bogus in the first place, and they are not just trying to leave a shit-hole country.
