my dad got sharper in retirement.
I only know 1 or 2 people who seemed sharper than my dad in his last few years...
I would definitely not have said that 15 years earlier when he retired at 63.


in retirement he traded 3 -4 hours a day and consumed the IBD and the journal.
Made millions (literally) but gave himself esophageal cancer.

my mom did nothing but always worry.
She is now 83 and was just diagnosed with dementia.
I will be trading in retirement but small enough to not stress me out.

yes, I heard that also. Almost all men smoked back then. He was one of the first to quit when he burned a hole in a new shirt putting a hot pipe back in the pocket after a shortened smoke break. I doubt there is anything in nicotine which helps. The report I heard was about chain smokers, so a person with a constant need for external stimulation may have some deficiency or lack of excess which helps prevent alzheimers from creeping in.
Only used his WWII cigarette rations for playing cards and came home from the war with $400 in his pocket.

Yes, that's my understanding too. The effect is apparently significant for pack a day or more smokers.

Thanks for digging up that example of leftwing bias from the biased fact checker politifact. Among Hillary Clinton's most revolting moments, lying to the parents and loved ones of the Benghazi victims surely has to rank at the top. Five of them stated that she blamed the tragedy on an obscure internet film. In the full glare of sunlight, when the Benghazi lies had been exposed, she denied making the statements and condescendingly accused the parents of being essentially crazy or senile.

Politifact was stumped by the conflicting claims of five separate family members who had never met and a politician with a well-earned reputation for being a compulsive liar.

So politifact had no choice but to say that little Marco had been naughty to make that claim in the first place. Next time he needed to play closer attention in case Hillary denied something, thereby making it untrue.

There are only two choices. One, Hillary was truthful and the family members were either lying or crazy.

Two, the family members were truthful and she was lying.

Politifact managed to come up with a third, that it was just a big mystery what she said and therefore Rubio's accusation was unsupported. Even though it was supported by the independent claims of people who didn't know each other.

Classic example of leftwing bias.
