DACA - anyone have a non-stupid prediction of what Trump will decide?

Even during the campaign, Trump was somewhat equivocal on the Dreamers. I fear he will be open to trading an amnesty on them for some sort of vague promises to fund the wall, promises that likely will not be kept. As on other issues too, giving the left concessions on DACA only raises the floor for further concessions. Next it will be citizenship for Dreamers, then a general amnesty. After all, aren't we compassionate?

Ultimately, Trump should decide this based on politics, as it is a highly political issue. Very few people screeching for DACA are voting for Trump, no matter what he does. However, many who voted for him will not turn out to do so again if he screws us on this and the wall never fully materializes.

The other thing that helps me reach this conclusion is the number of obnoxious Dreamers lecturing us on "American" values and what evil racist scum we are. Blame your parents, not us.

If we're such "evil racist scum", why do they want to live among us? (I know, rhetorical question... as all they really want is free money from American taxpayers.) If they're so convinced we're "evil", perhaps they should just PACK UP THEIR SHIT AND GIT!!

Sorry... I can't appreciate it when people bitch about their freebies.

So basically Sessions announced that they will not process new DACA applications. However will renew permits during the next six months for those already in the program; and those currently under DACA will not have action taken on their existing permits -- which seems to imply they will not be deported (until their permits expire several years from now).

"The Trump administration pitched the move as the "least disruptive" option available after facing a threat from 10 conservative state attorneys general to challenge the program in court, according to senior administration officials briefing reporters on the move during a conference call conducted on condition of anonymity."

Therefore Trump sets the table for Congress to take action during the next six months.

When a President circumvents Congress and the American People via Presidential Edict, don't be surprised when it's all undone by the next POTUS, specially when there's been such a dramatic shift from left to right.

If DACA is the answer why didn't it make it into actual law thru Congress.

Trump would be correct in rescinding Obama's executive orders and making Congress deal with the issue in a lawful manner.

Admittedly I read an article on a hit and run basis between ticks on the charts, but from that article I got the understanding- rightly or wrongly- that daca kids could renew up until october 10 or something, then nobody is covered after March.

wait, i see that i still have that article tab up. It says they can renew for two years but they wont get the full two years if it shiites the bed in congress.

Trump has given daca the best shot at surviving.

The lefty media likes to make this out to be a showdown between trump and the dreamers. No it isn't - unless you only think short term. He does not have the power to extend it if the courts shoot it down and then what? It all comes back to congress regardless of what trump does. It cannot survive in the courts. Immigration law is 100% under the control of congress with the exception of very limited emergency decisions. Trump found that out in the travel ban case and the lefties loved it. But those same principles apply to daca as well- and now they want a president to not be bound by the law but in their favor.

The headlines read to the effect that Trump killed daca. The headlines could as easily read that he extended it and gave it a chance for an orderly disposition. But he has no power to extend it. He will only get away with it because the states that were lined up to go to court will just let the clock tick now.

Actually with a Conservative coalition in Congress led by Senator Tillis driving the "Dreamer Act" which is basically DACA with a new name --- it is very promising that "DACA" survivies. I will note that this proposed act has support on both sides of the aisle.

Quite so.

Everyone is predicting that this all going to be a big showdown between the moderate conservatives and the far right in congress. Not so. The far right will object bigly but- unlike Crockcare- no will try to cater to them. There are many dems in states that voted for trump who are up for re-election and can be had. Good luck to them going to their lefty constituents and saying "I flushed the dreamers down the drain because trump wanted more money for the wall than I was willing to support and I know that's what y'all would have wanted."
