Well there is somthing... Whether it is our brain doing something amazing or an external influence I cannot say.
I did primary flight training at Torrance Airport, Zamperini Field. I started working for the aviation company where I trained for free flight time. I did some radio/nav gear work but I also test flew new engine installations.
I was scheduled to take up a re-engined 182 in the morning. I laid down to sleep and had the most lucid dream of my life. I dreamed I flew a box departure (to stay over the field in case the engine grenaded) and climbed to 4500 AGL to get on the special flight rules corridor North. When I leveled off at 4500 I went to retard the throttle and the engine went... "buh" and the rpm stayed at 1400 despite advancing and retarding the knob.. and I woke up.
When I walked into dispatch in the morning I blurted out that I dreamed that I had a throttle problem 4500 feet over the building. The owner said he would turn on the base unit radio and monitor me.
I taxied into the run-up area and was super meticulous with the checklist. The throttle seemed completely normal and I ran it up and down at least 10 times. I climbed out on my box departure and leveled off at 4500 and retarded the throttle. The engine went "buh" and the rpm stayed at 1400 despite advancing and retarding the knob. That is not enough revs for level flight and too much for landing.
I gave the tower a call and said I was having some difficulty and needed a little room. I did not declare an emergency but they scattered everyone away from the airport for me. I flew out a bit from the airport decending and got honked around and lined up. The engine had a carburetor and so it had a mixture knob and I yanked it to full rich and killed the engine as I was coming over the fence. I rolled out and off the active onto a taxiway. A truck rolled up and handed me the form that has two boxes, incident or accident and I checked neither and wrote "just a tow" at the top of the form.
Not gonna lie, I feel like my paternal grandmother looks after me. There is definitely something we can't see.
Our A&P mechanic used the wrong washer where the throttle assembly clamped to the cable. He used a teflon washer and the throttle assy. slid freely up and down the cable when we looked at it. It was a new carb with a stiff spring. Fuck me.
