the reason the banking systems are bad is so they can put charges on. i worked at a bank. the banks want you to pay charges and purposely run the bank badly to create such scenarios. they are seriously evil.

That sell-off last Thursday when the S&P 500 went down 100+ points was apparently due to new automated trading !
With new tech comes new problems too. If 1 system can do 1000s of trades a second it may take years to sort out

I generally hate arguing, it's pointless in so many ways, thus I will make this my last post on this thread

it's pretty obvious from my starting post that I'm talking about technology that can give a country an edge over other countries, not gagdets and toys, more like the birth and growth of civil engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and finally software engineering that took place in the the previous centuries

unlike what nitro believes, each system has it's own properties, thus even if created, maintaning an utopia on this planet is not possible

hoping to see serious breakthroughts in science in the next few decades is just false hope, the reality is that the best that can happen in the next few decades is that no wars take place, but even that is not possible, right now such rapid and serious shifts in power are taking place that the governments of developed countries can't cope with it, they are trying very hard to act cool as if everything is going to be ok, but they themsevles are scared shitless, the system is not working, so many functions of it are paralyzed and the worst part is; there is no fix for it

My theory, which many will dispute, is that USA intentionally slowed down so our "allies" could keep up. We abandoned the Apollo program, which was something America only could do, to go for the International Space Station, and other joint efforts with our allies. At the same time, we allowed students and scientists from other countries to start crowding out Americans in technical fields.

My feeling is we would have a base on the moon with thousands of inhabitants if we hadn't slowed down our technological advancement. And by advancement, I'm not talking about faster computer chips or better TVs and music players. I'm talking about great leaps forward.

True, but this is not a technology problem, it is the advantage of last comer (if smart enough).
Moreover it is a proof of stupid use of money developed countries are doing: inflating bubbles (like real estate) instead to use abundant capitals to invest in their future. Standard behaviour of aging people, IMHO (on the average, of course there exceptions).

geithner you miss very important points because you are trying to boil economics down to technology.

Economics is psychology, and is therefore mostly about culture. Technology flows from culture because in order to be a high tech country you need very talented people developing the technology.

Japan was flattened in WWII, but became the second largest economy. Their culture of dedication to such achievment enabled it. Haiti will NEVER be an advanced economy unless they discover oil there. They lack the culture to support it.
