The ME is changing and Israel is now no longer the Cold War bastion it once was and its really only Iran and Syria that remain as viable enemies and I would say that Iran is going flip over into something resembling a democracy in the next couple of years and Syria feeling left out will eventually conform. I wonât say itâs a great neighbourhood but its getting better every year and with the US establishing a long term mission of sorts in the area I would say the need for Israel as a lever is now diminishing. I would say the possession of nuclear weapons has little to do with a nations relevance take a look at Pakistan for instance which is a nuclear nation but if it was not for Afghanistan and the war on terror it would be a nation better known for exporting migrants and good cricket. I don't know about Scotland but I doubt Israel would struggle. The entire aid package including loan guarantees is 2.5billion dollars which is not that much to begin with. Moreover it comes with so many strings attached that I don't think Israel would actually lose financially.
Israel would undoubtedly lose politically if the US cut it loose. So would the US which would lose its influence and negotiating leverage in the Middle East. But financially the fact that Israel must buy US weaponry, can't sell to China and many other countries, can't develop competing weapona etc by and large cancels out the financial benefits of the aid it gets.
You can muster all the chutzpah in the world but Israel is no more relevant as a nation than say the Republic of Ireland.
I don't know if you can seriously compare a nuclear power in the middle of the most oil rich and most explosive region in the world with the Republic of Ireland (or the United Kindom for that matter). I actually wish Israel was not relevant and be left alone to deal with its internal and primarily external problems. But the absurdly high number of articles about Israel in british newspapers, the non-stop stink about israel emanating from primarily european ultra-liberal left and the UN's obsession with israel et the expense of real crises and real attrocities elsewhere in the world demonstrate quite convincingly that unfortunately Israel is still very very relevant.

I am not sure why you're so obsessed (no offense meant) with Israel's relevance. Israel's relevance is a red herring, I don't remember anyone arguing with you whether Israel will or will not remain relevant, frankly I don't think anyone cares. In fact Israel does not want to be "relevant", Israel just wants to be, Israel would love to become less "relevant" so that the world (including the anti-Israel crowd in the UK) stop looking with a microscope for every minor flaw, violation or mistake in its actions and blowing them totally out of proportion (while all other real crises, genocides and atrocities go completely unnoticed).
Besides you probably have not noticed but while the cold war is indeed over, the islamo-nazi fundamentalism is rearing its ugly head. The Islamic expansion today is of unprecedented proportions. You should probably get out of Scotland more, go to Londonistan or Paris and see for yourself. The West is giving up one position after another. Have you seen the cartoons of prophet Mohamed lately? Well, being an anglophile my entire life (not any more) I do agree but we have to understand that the animosity is coming from the UK, not from Israel and not from the US. Israel and the US have never criticized the actions of the UK in the Folklend War, in Iraq, in Afghanistan or elsewhere. On the other hand the anti-American and especially anti-Israel stench coming from the United Kingdom, from its ultra-left/islamic alliance, from its media like the BBC, Guardian etc is sometimes overwhelming.

There is no Israel obsession on my part but a deep interest in that region amongst others. You do have a valid point on certain media outlets focus on Israel but it not a constant by any means and the UK broadsheets do provide a great deal of cover on other world events.

I still do not think Israel will be a lever in the war against aggressive fundemental Islam as its focus is much closer to home and the US pretty much has it covered in the region. I have never understood the term âislamo-naziâ as I see little connection between the Germanic version of National Socialism and aggressive Islam its just another daft term banded about like âZionaziâ it seems everyone wants to paint the other side blacker all the time. What ever next âIslamopedoâ or âZiopederastâ. I visit London a lot especially the East End and would hardly call it Londonstan, with Brick Lane being the only area where I find a lot of Bangladeshis its pretty much like any large Western city full of many races and religions. I feel Israel and Palestine is a conflict over land rather than religion which is in it self only an aggravating factor rather than Israel being point man in the war against aggressive Islam that position goes of course to the USA which has shown itself to the world leader in combating extremism.
