Now that a few have already succeeded in bamboozling their electorates, it seems that clowns the world over are getting ambitious, putting on their shoes and trying to go places.

You will have understand Toronto since the 1998 amalgamation. This merger of the suburbs into the city was opposed by both residents of the core city and the suburbanites.

Since the amalgamation, the belief in the suburbs was that all their tax money was going towards large projects in the downtown area while the suburbs were not getting reasonable levels of service for trash collection, etc.

The downtown area of Toronto tends to be liberal while most of the suburbs lean conservative.

Mayor Ford ran on "stopping the gravy train" - a reference to all the giveaways of tax money in the downtown Toronto area coupled with absurd spending. The suburbs easily bought into his vision and voted him into office. IMO the residents of the suburbs were already so pissed at the situation with lack of services and unhelpful city government they could have successfully elected an animal from the Toronto zoo at that time.

I recall reading about "stopping the gravy train." Simple minds, simple slogans. (Drain the swamp, anyone?) There's been municipal amalgamation in my neck of the woods as well, and few are happy about it. But who could have predicted that the dissatisfaction could have resulted in barbers performing surgery (to borrow from a line from Here4money in another thread and in another context)?
