Of course the dollar amount is a scam...
But the quarantine is necessary...not a scam for all travelers entering Canada.
The issue I'm raising is that this Pandemic has been going on for a year and we've have border closures too.
The first time they tried it...there was no mandatory quarantine nor quarantine hotels. Simply, the government trusted people that they would go straight home after landing at the airport.
They were going shopping at malls / stores, visiting others that were not a member of their household prior to going home. Thus, the quarantine is necessary but the rates are outrageous plus the other complaints.
- They discover "most" were not doing such.
There's been a few cases of sexual assault but that's actually normal in the hotel industry. The most common complaint is the food service which is why many are now being prepare when they return via relying more on their friends / relatives especially those with special dietary needs.
Seriously, for $1,000 dollars per night...people were expecting a 5 star food experience.
A friend of mine had his relatives bring to the hotel what he needed prior to check in...potential food problems solved.

If the Canadian government does not want to foster a "quarantine hotel" scam.... then the government needs to step up and pay for the hotel quarantine stays for incoming travelers --- Or the government needs to define a single clearly defined rate that must be charged to travelers for quarantine stays including standards for the food that must be served to them and the amenities in the room.
Canada needs to follow the path of what other civilized countries are doing in terms of quarantine facilities. For example, New Zealand is charging NZ$3,100 for the first adult, $950 for each additional adult and $475 for each child to stay in their quarantine hotels/facilities for two weeks -- with clearly defined food and services. For a family arriving in New Zealand the exact cost and services are known up-front. You don't arrive at the hotel front desk and get scammed.
