Canada ranks worst among 16 OECD countries for its high number of coronavirus-related deaths in elderly care homes, according to a Canadian Institute for Health Information report released Thursday.

Part time and low wage staff are ways a problem. Their homes got hit hard alright until the army came in. But you want to make a comparison on health systems?

Worldometers right now shows :

USA deaths per million 383, Canada 225.

The USA is going off a cliff in new cases. As the general pop gets sicker it will increasingly penetrate care homes. Let's see how the US looks in a month.

It's got zero to do with our health care system. If only the US had socialized medicine you wouldn't be in nearly as bad a situation as you are now.

Privately run for profit retirement homes were the majority of the problem. Overall, the virus has once again helped highlight how much better our health care system is then the US system. Without our horrible record containing the virus in these homes our death rates due to this virus are quite well contained. Thank you to our excellent medical system and staff for making this happen.

Once this reality came out it was unacceptable to any of us serious reform is under way including several residences were taken over by the government.

Seems to be the habit of some Americans on here to lash out at other countries like Canada when shit really hits the fan in the US. Kind of a method of denial. Canadians accept the reality that a lot of retirement homes were run terribly by mediocre or worse operators.
 
Canada has 8,500 deaths out of 38,000,000 people the US has 125,000 deaths out of 330,000,000 people.

Per capita we have ~80% more deaths.

Try worrying about home.

Chances of dying in Canada if you contract Covid are 50% greater. Yah hey great health care system though. Pffft.

Because the majority of those infected were the elderly in long-term care facilities, and the older you are, the higher the risk of death, all else being equal.

As others have noted previously in this thread, if you factor out LTC, we would be doing even better than we're doing now compared to the US. So, yeah, LTC is key. More so here than in the countries of comparison.

Identifying the problem is the first step in correcting it. Tell that to Trump, who wants to cut down on testing because the numbers make him look bad.
