And then Johnson increased spending a lot (for Vietnam) without either raising taxes or cutting spending and messed up the economy so bad that he didn't even run for a second term. The inflation wave of the 70s was created by Johnson and his timid economic moves. He was good for the Civil Rights movement but a terrible president wrt the war of that time and the economy.

Which means that when you cut taxes you have to eliminate spending too. McCain understands this and is talking about it, but if he is elected and inherits a Democratic Congress, they will not play ball and will act to not cut spending in order to discredit his policies. That's what Daschle tried to do to Bush early on, and it worked in part, not perfectly. There's no better situation than when the White House and Congress play off the same sheet of music, cooperate for the good of the country. (Even then, they have to worry about renegate judges who are always legislating from the bench...)
