Building My Trading Rig (A Documentary)

with tool-less design, installing the harddisk was a snap.
A twist of the tab and the harddisk is locked in place.

installing the PCI-e cards (Video and sound) was just as easy.
See the arrow pointing to the lever. It holds the cards in place instead of screws !

Everything is in place, looks like it is ready to go.

You are correct that there are NOT a whole lot of applications for Vista, let alone for the 64 bit version.

Even on applications that "claim" to support Vista, most of them are going through teething pains.

If you ask me for recommendation, I would say XP for sure. The OS is stable, the drivers are plenty. There is just no reason to change.

I happen to run 2 programs that can take advantage of VISTA 64 bit, thus my decision to give this OS a try. I can always fall back to XP if this does not work out.

Are the 2 programs trading applications ?

If they are would you mind sharing what they are ?

thank you

One of the program is MultiCharts.
http://www.tssupport.com/multicharts/

(note: MultiCharts supports Vista 64 bit, but it does not need 8GB memory. For my current purpose, it does not even use more than 1GB of memory.)

The other program is proprietary. It can use all the power I throw at it.

Haven't tested the idea, but it seems logical that for trading... performance would be enhanced more by having faster RAM, FSB, and mobo than faster CPU. [/B]

And the 64 bit bus. Big fat highway.

When you have your gig up and running, could you let us know how multicharts run on Vista 64 bit ?

Performance wise compare to XP ?

thanks

I don't think VISTA would add speed to MultiCharts, but the Quad-Core CPU would. Because MultiCharts can assign each chart window to a CPU core.
e.g. If I have 4 chart windows opened, the workload would be spread across the 4 CPU cores.

At any rate, I will keep you posted on the outcome.
