Seems like a waste for you to head off to Afghanistan given your qualifications - though you seem to be thinking that just cause you have a degree from a top 20 institution that the world owes you a living.
Anyway, there a lot of jobs you could do without joining the military. This seems so extreme that as someone else said, is more like a cry for help. Just be a labourer or something. You never know what opportunities arise, and it's better to be looking for work, while employed, than looking for work whilst unemployed.
Based in Asia, another option would be teaching English out here. Sure, it's a shit job with relatively low wages, but you can see a bit of the world and you can shag lots of fit birds while you're here, at least until the end of the downturn.
Should you go to Afghanistan and have your legs blown off or something, things will be even harder for you.
