The buyers are just idiots that didn't understand that the lender was a wolf in sheeps clothing looking for his next meal. That or they buyers were duplicit with the lenders knowing full well they couldn't repay the mortgage and just wanted a free home to squat in until it was time to move on to the next scam.

Bottom line, regulators failed horribly and major overegulation will probably be the end result of all of this.
