Brain Teasers

Quote from daniel_m:

SOOOOOO commisso, if _I_ saw YOU with a dot, i would KNOW it was YOU that has to kill yourself.

under no circumstances would i even think of killing myself. i have been given the criteria for suicide, i see that YOU satisfy it, so i would assume you would kill yourself.

BUT in the example you gave me, you had me seeing YOU with the dot, and then seeing YOU wake up the next day (alive). under those circumstances, i can only imagine you cheated.

No Dan it would tell you we BOTH had the dot... jeese your smarter than this danny...

you are slooooooow sometimes danny boy, but im done...

go on amazon and run a search for Godel Escher and Bach; an Eternal Golden Braid... perhaps this may help :)

PEACE
Commisso

oh, finally. i got it.

there was a solution, and freakin EXPLANATION.

i'll take whatever abuse you wanna hurl at me for not getting it. that's fine.

the thing that gets up my nose is that i thought you guys were trying to say there was NO explanation. i wasn't even entertaining the thought that the riddle could be explained.

for that commisso, i have to call you FULL OF SHIT. (and lobster, you might wanna learn the fine art of clear communciation)

it wasn't "fuzzy" at all. it's pure logic. you just dont' know what the fuck you are talking about.

i hope there is some other dickhead that doesn't get this riddle so that _I_ can explain it, and watch, i gurantee he'll understand my EXPLANATION from the get-go.

let me remind you, too, that in that island example you gave, you said "THE ONE" with the dot. can you see how that is misleading? if you said that ANYONE with a dot must die, it would have been clear.

let me let you in on a little secret. good communicators assume that the meaning of a communication is determined by the response it illicts. that way, they are always looking at THEMSELVES for ways to improve their message. a lesson we could all use.

in your twisted version of the world, you'd expect someone to understand the fine points of molecular biology by reading them a few storeis about mice and frogs.

realise dude that you can't so simply relegate all understanding to "right brain" thinking, as emotionally satisfying that might be to you.

thanks for wasting my time.

Quote from daniel_m:

that is just bullshit.

you fail to state whether the monks were TOLD that there were exactly 10 of them with the disease.

if they were told, then it's straight simple. you can see nine others, it means number ten is you. they'd all go kill themselves that night.

if this is meant to be a directly logical problem, then use of "right brain" doesn't factor into any explanation.

without that knowledge, the only reasonable answer is "they guessed right".

:D :p :D :) :p :D APPLEHEAD

You are right Danny!!! I am stupid and you are brilliant...

commisso, you are right to laugh.

i am a little surprised, though, that you needed to make that post, given that my explanation above was posted 17 minutes before yours.

ok, it's my turn... This one was a question asked during one of Microsoft job interview :

There are 4 rooms. doors closed. Each room has one light bulb. Outside, there is a switch that control the light in one of the rooms. You turn the switch on, and turn it off. How do you know in which room the light was turned on?

Cheers!! :)

Quote from Lobster:

A monastery houses 100 monks who are not allowed to communicate with each other in any way. They meet only once per day, for dinner at a large round table, but even then they are not allowed to talk, give signs or anything, only to look at each other. There is only one exception to this rule: In case of an emergency the head of the monastery is allowed to speak. One evening he does that and tells his monks that there is a disease among them. Those who have contracted it have a big red spot on their forhead. Although the disease is not contagious, he gives the order that every monk has to kill himself the day he finds out that he has the disease. There are no mirrors in the monastery and no way for any monk to see his own forhead. But every evening each one sees all the other monks' forheads, just not his own. Ten of the 100 monks have the disease and therefore the dot. After the first supper, they all go to their rooms, and everyone returns the next evening. The same thing happens until the tenth day after the announcement. On the eleventh evening only 90 monks return from their chambers to eat. The other 10 have committed suicide. They were exactly the diseased ones. How did they know?
correct me if i'm wrong, but isn't it as simple as:

on the first day, all the monks will try to count 10 monks with dots. if they can only count 9, they will kill themselves. it shouldn't even take 10 days.

but then again, this assumes they all have the dots right away.
