the above is an attempt at an EXPLANATION. an explanation must make sense to OTHER PEOPLE, otherwise, it's not an explanation at all.

now, if the monks weren't told how many of them had the disease, your above explanation fails.

for you to then turn around and say well, " i got the right answer didn't I" is meaningless. the question posed was "how did they know they had the disease"? the only "right answer" to that question is to explain how they knew.

if using your "right brain" helps you to conceptualise the problem and then come up with an ANSWER, great. BUT, without an explanation, the only use for your "right brain intuition" is for you to say "the monks just knew". which is no explanation at all.

Te' gave you a very good first step with his "island" scenario, I could take it from there and play the whole thing with three people, but since you seem to be having difficulties understanding the 2 people case, I don't want to rush you. Once you understand how it works with only one or two affected monks, then we can take the next step.

commisso, the question was "HOW did they know"?

the only "correct" answer to that question is to explain HOW they knew. so, i ask you, on what basis can you possibly claim to "know the answer" when you haven't provided us with an explanation of how the monks knew?

you can CLAIM to know, and you may very well know. but an explanation actually explains so that others may know too. get it?

Te' didn't give me anything with his example. if there's two people on the island and one has the disease, well DUH, you look at the other guy and he ain't got a dot so you know it's you.
with THREE people, well, then you have no way of KNOWING, do you? and if you DO have a way of knowing, why not EXPLAIN to me what this way is? just claiming "i know how they can know" is no explanation.

lobster, since i'm not into playing any childish games, if you really do know how the monks can know, now would be a good time to explain it. but please, stop patronising me with your "i don't wat to rush you" bullshit.
