I don't know anything about any of that. And nothing I posted would suggest, I hope, that Jesse Helms, may his vile remains rot in hell, was ever a member of the KKK. How on Earth would I know that? What I was referring to was the fact that in the South, after reconstruction, the whites were Democrats and Republicans were black. But later, in the Twentieth Century, the Southern whites were much better aligned philosophically with the Northern Republicans. (I don't know why I'm pointing this out. Surely you know this.)
Helms was, as a young man, a Democrat. But at some point he realized that his conservative positions did not align well with the democratic party of his time, and he became a Republican, He is acknowledged as one of the key influences in getting other southern democrats to switch parties. It took a long time, especially in the laggard States. You mentioned a recruiter for the KKK. If this "recruiter" says he is a Democrat I wouldn't be surprised, given the South's History. . (And even if he was a KKK recruiter in Greenland, he'd certainly want to pay homage to his heritage.)
I just assumed you knew that Deep South Democrats in the mid twentieth Century were not the same as Boston Democrats.
Apparently you didn't.
By the way, I am neither a Republican nor Democrat .
I have taken the trouble to look this up for you:

I found
this amusing: "The
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, which had a reputation for liberalism, was also a frequent target of Helms' criticism. He is said to have referred to the university as "The University of Negroes and Communists"
You went to Chapel Hill, did you not? So which one are you, "negro" or "communist"? I found Mr. Helms endlessly entertaining. I wish I were a Christian so I could be confident of Jesse getting what he deserved. Sadly, I suspect he got off lightly and is just rotting away in the ground somewhere.
