Black Friday

Quote from trader_arb:

Does it matter though? Serious question. If the market rallies on bad unemployment with little chance of improvement, would black friday sales- which are hard to quantify to begin with, make a difference? I'm sure theres some BS reason for a rally, or no reason such as excess liquidity (thanks fed).
Your point is very well taken from the standpoint of "Trade what you see, not what you think." Markets go where they want, logic notwithstanding.

I speak more from a macro perspective.

I decided to venture over the border to do some black friday shopping for the first time yesterday. The sales were very disappointing to say the least. Most things weren't on sale, and some select items were only 10-50% off but none of those things are good. I don't believe any of those items were sold below cost.

The clothing outlets did have good sales though. Most stores had everthing marked down 25-50% from their lowest prices. Even then they are still making lots of money because they buy most of their goods for .05 to .08 on the dollar. For example: Isaia suit retails for 3000 but sold for 1500 at outlet. They give an additional 50% for BF. Profit is still 510 to 600 dollars, or 200%+ return.

Boxing day in Canada is much better. Won't bother trying black friday again. And the lines and stores yesterday looked very short and empty to me.

thanks for the info. Speaking of clothing I want to buy some classy shirts/sweaters/outerwear so if you know of any particularly good sales still going on let me know. I have been checking online and some stores still have Black Friday pricing in effect through Sunday or Monday.

I think last year there was a surplus so they lowered the prices to get rid of the inventory.

The deals for computers and components were terrible compared to last year. Memory prices are actually higher this year.

Yes I just shopped for RAM and it's regular price so pass for now. If there is a decent sale Monday maybe.

I buy most of my stuff on this one forum because the deals are better than anything you can find in stores (generally 75%+ off). You must know your size and measurements though for a proper fit. I expect a lot of new stuff to go for sale soon on the forum because the guys will have found good stuff on BF and are looking to flip for some money (why go search for the good valued stuff when these guys will do it for you). It's a pretty tight community so there are rarely any ever problems between buyers and sellers.

For sites with good quality clothes that are always heavily discounted:

http://store.ehaberdasher.com/StoreFront.bok (my favorites are the brunello cucinelli outerwear)
http://www.shopthefinest.com/
http://www.virtualclotheshorse.com/
http://www.sierratradingpost.com (can usually find stackable coupons which makes things ridiculously cheap)

and for more fashion forward but not as deep as discounts:

www.bluefly.com
www.yoox.com

if you're in the NYC region you can look for sales here

http://www.thechoosybeggar.com/

but if you're like most people, i would just go to a large fashion outlet mall. for something cheap that looks nice, banana republic outlet has v-neck merino wool sweaters for a little over 20 dollars (after the 50% off everything in store discount which is nation wide)

pm me if youve got any questions. im always up for talking about clothes, hence my username...

I have been talking to sales people. They are telling me they will be surprised to see 2/3 of last years sales at the same time.

I am going to predict a poor to disastrous BF. Black Friday extends to Internet Monday, so Tuesday the sentiment begins to come in.

cnn reported that retail sales are higher than last year during black friday.
... :)
CHICAGO (Reuters) - In a worrisome sign for retailers, data released on Saturday showed that sales rose a scant 0.5 percent on the traditional kickoff to the holiday shopping season despite early signs of a strong showing. ... In 2008, Black Friday sales measured by ShopperTrak rose 3 percent compared to the prior year's Black Friday. Last year's entire holiday season marked the worst performance in nearly 40 years. ... Even though online sales are growing, they still account for less than 4 percent of total retail sales, Karson said. ...
