Vice President Joe Biden and Rep. Paul Ryan were the two candidates on stage at Thursdayâs vice presidential debate, but a third character emerged: Joe Bidenâs laugh, which didnât escape the notice of tweeting politicos. (And led, of course, to at least three satirical Twitter accounts: Laughing Joe Biden, Biden Smirk, and yet another Laughing Joe Biden.)
Weekly Standardâs Mark Hemingway: âJoe Bidenâs laughing through talking about Iran sanctions?â
TIMEâs Michael Scherer: âNot sure debate cameras have been light tested for Bidenâs teeth. Best to watch with sunglasses.â
Washington Examinerâs Philip Klein: âBidenâs strategy seems to be to laugh at Ryan constantly. Will it work to infantalize Ryan, or backfire like Gore sighing?â
NBCâs David Gregory: âBidenâs smile is out of control.â
BuzzFeedâs Ben Smith: âSo did Biden practice laughing at Ryan???â

Former Eric Cantor staffer Brad Dayspring: âJoe Biden needs to realize this isnât a Senate Foreign Relations Hearing. His laughter and condescending attitude is a disaster.â

Washington Examinerâs Paul Bedard: âCanât tell yet if Bidenâs smirking, laughs, eye-rolling, head shaking, works for him or not against the oh-so-young looking eager Ryan.â
Former White House press secretary Ari Fleischer: âBiden is at risk of having his laugh come across like Goreâs sighs. He should knock it off.â
The New York Timesâ Ashley Parker: âBidenâs grin is Chesire Cat caliber.â
Republican strategist Ron Bonjean: âBiden laughing does not come off with the intended effect. It is actually hurting him. Looks very condescending.â
