Ah, yes. Right outside the DNC. What will Joe say about this? Maybe he can demonstrate his empathy and compassion all those Hollywood elites think he has.

Yeh well, everyone gets to run their own campaign.
Trump needs to do okay at the convention but he needs to maximize opportunities just as you said. And he needs to maximize what works for him. Joe needs to maximize the convention and the teleprompter because that is all he has going. Trump just needs to get it over with and continue on getting out and about. Whether Mike Pence is just boring or extremely boring at the convention does not matter in the scheme of things. Everyone will be out taking care of business both before and after the convention. Joe needs the convention to pack in people around him such as the Obamas and those Hollywood types with their tits because there is no enthusiasm for Joe as a standalone cardboard cut-out candidate.
The main feature at the dem convention was the Obamas and Hollywood tits.
The main feature at the pub convention will be Trump.
See if you can spot the difference that that might make for the longevity of any bump that occurs. We know that Joe will be looking good in any setting where he has the Obamas with him and the Hollywood tits with him. After that, it's back to ho-hum.
Parties typically see a bounce after their conventions complete --- so a "bounce" is expected. The question is "how much of a bounce" compared to previous DNC conventions.
The other thing to keep in mind is that the RNC is coming up shortly and the Republicans will also typically see a bounce after their convention -- which gets back to the question of how big of a bounce.
In my opinion these post conventions bounces do not have staying power and are next to meaningless. The debates which occur much closer to the election are much more meaningful from a polling perspective -- especially among unaffiliated voters.

This is not saying they will not focus on economic policies - they are stupid after all.
