Best (least regulated) country for entrepreneurship?

So, let me get this straight, you want to find somewhere where you can do business like it was done in the 18th century ? No labor laws, no regulations ... leaving you free to employ kids, make people work 24/7 without breaks or holidays, and basically screw everyone apart from yourself ?

Well, you won't find that in any "western" country, that's for sure.

You won't find it in most of the larger developing nations either (e.g. India, China).

You would probably have to go looking in some of the less reputable African countries.

Not that I'm saying Africa is still in the 18th century with no labor laws or regulations .... but seeing as you have no business morals, Africa (or certain parts of it) is one of those remaining places where a brown envelope with dollar notes passed between the right people might help "turn a blind eye".

But as I said, only certain parts of Africa, the less reputable countries. And remember .... corruption works both ways, you exploit them and they sure as hell will find ways to exploit you.

Finally, just to make it clear, I am NOT promoting corruption in Africa. I think people who engage in such things are disgusting.

Infact, to be honest, I also don't think much of people like you who seem to think they should be above the law and want to be able to bypass regulations that are there for good reason.... to protect the vulnerable from people like you.

Therefore, as I explained, if you don't like labor laws or regulatory compliance, then you're going to have to go "do business" in some godforsaken country.

Well, keep in mind a good place to be an entrepreneur is not just low regulatory hurdles but also the availability of talented people. Hong Kong is unarguably less regulated than the US or UK when it comes to starting up a business. You can register a completely new limited liability company without a lawyer in less than 5 days for around 100-150 bucks in HK. However, want to find programming talent in the city or people with equal vision and excitement and passion? You will have to search very hard. You will find more like-minded and qualified people in London or certain US cities. So, in the ranking you need to take a host of different variables into account.

Reminds me of the time I spent 45 minutes trying to identify myself at HSBC and I finally found out the girl behind the desk was giving me a hard time because I didn't capitalize my street address. Some people are not worth the time. You are right about that.

My thought was just to look for countries with depressed / developing economies. But, usually these countries are that way for a reason . . . the people.

Not always. Poland was such a country after the Sovjet Union crashed. Look at it now. Very succesful. People have working mentality. Same story for Czech Republic.
Others where the people still have the communistic reflex that the government will take care of you and you have to do nothing are Slovakia, Rumania, Bulgaria.

A country with a lot of possibilities (depends of what your real intentions are) is the USSR. But you need lots of money and enough arms and bodyguards. But if you have that you can do anything you want. But others can too... Shortly after the USSR broke down there were suddenly a few billionaires. Billionaires who suddenly went from poor to extremely rich. Many who tried to become billionaires ended up dead.

Completely with you there, the US is supposed to have easy going labour laws by world standards btw, although it seems quite horrible on many other levels.
I wouldn't worry too much about Tim Smith's reaction, he's - kinda - Zzzz1's alter ego.

I used to do business in Myanmar before they mended ties with the US and fred Aung San Suu Kiy ( I drove many time by her villa in Yangon btw, where she was under house arrest, it was a very large villa in a posh neighbourough. Not a bad place to be stuck in, at least by Burmese standards). Anyway Yangon was lot of fun, quite sheltered from labour protection and human rights abuses championned by western countries. But as many third world economies other regulations or lack of proper infrastructure made it quite a poor place to establish a business, especially an international one. As you mentioned later on :

"If there were any country that met my description, even if only for the regulatory aspect, my guess is they would be pretty wealthy in short order."

But there are advantages to settle in emerging and possibly thirld world economies, while the regulations seem daunting, in practice they might end up way less cumbersome than in first world countries.
