Best internet connection for scalping- trying to decide between cable and dsl ?

Quote from trader123abc:

So my read for line 12, last line in test
38ms 37 ms 38ms gw1.ibllc.com{208.245.107.3}

The above was the last line of the trace
to IB. So this would be a good trace number?

I have always had good fills so I am guessing the above test are good?

Trader

Those are excellent numbers!
You are fine.

Once again, you show that you have NO IDEA what we are talking about here . . . We are talking about "trace-routes", and the latency issues that revolve around the path that our ISP's take to the data-feed servers that we connect to with our brokers.

A Speakeasy speed test ( although fun to do ) is not what this discussion has been about.

Now please do us all a favor and head back to the TRADING FORUM where you make all of your ridiculous posts with your buddy, "S2007S".

:D

Yeah apparently Aaron didn't read where I explained in very basic terms the differences between bandwidth and latency. If he had he could have made a more intelligent post.

Mav, the Hardware and Software Forums are one of the few areas here on ET that involve intelligent ( and more often than not ) valuable discussion . . . as opposed to all of the absurd posts that litter the Trading Forum. Glad to see the quality of content on the Hardware Forum remain high.

As for Speedtests my Comcast Blast Service ( $52.95 per month ) from the West Coast shows the following dl/ul speeds near today's market close:

To:

NYC: 11.1 / 3.0
NYC: 13.4 / 3.0

Wash DC: 10.6 / 3.0
Wash DC: 10.3 / 3.1

Chicago: 22.6 / 3.0
Chicago: 20.9 / 3.0

Dallas: 19.3 / 3.1
Dallas: 16.4 / 3.1

LA: 31.7 / 3.0
LA: 30.1 / 3.1

What did you use to test speeds? Would be interesting to see what i am getting on normal Comcast service in Houston.

Mav,

Spend the extra $10 per month ( $52.95 ) and you can get the Comcast Blast Service.
At the very least you will double your download speed, and increase your upload by 9 X's.

It's well worth it!
:p

NOTE: Be sure to make certain that if you are using a Router that the router is fairly new. I was using a 4 year old Belkin router which is the exact same model as produced today. However, they are now up to Version 4000 and mine was Version 1000. Even though I updated with new "firmware" from Belkin's website, my Version 1000 4-port ( hardwired ) Router was actually "capped" at 7.4 MB's per second due to its weak ass processor. I got a new Router ( from Airlink ) which I had read favorable reviews on and it allowed me to really realize the potential of my comcast broadband. I owe a lot of credit to ET poster Dustin for this because he was the one that turned me on to the issue.

You can buy us both a beer the next time you are in San Francisco!
:D

Thanks to everyone who replied! Gives me a lot to think about .
I am going to go with the Cogeco enterprise package for now and if I am unhappy with it, I will look into the fiber or t1. I feel a lot more comfortable knowing that I am already trading on cable and, even though it is annoyingly slow at times, I am still able to trade fine on it the majority of the time. I think the issue may be with the software some of the time anyway.

Thanks again :)
