Funding is not the issue. If you lack funding for adequate security, you don't put people out there as targets. Like Tree said, it was all about trying to maintain the illusion that the disastrous Libyan intervention had been a good idea.

The thing that has always grated me is they didn't even try to do a damn thing to save those guys. They claimed a rescue mission would have arrived too late, which itself is evidence of extremely poor planning. So what, you send them anyway. You never know for sure. They had fighters in Italy that could have been overhead in a very short period. Even a low level supersonic pass would likely have frightened the terrorists off.

This is the key point right here... while the attacks were ongoing, NOBODY knew how long they'd last. Which means, you send in a QRF. Period. Leaving Americans hanging out to die is unconscionable.
