You raise a good point, but there is still something of a trade-off, I suppose. Were it not for P&R, some of the annoying characters would not be posting on your site at all. So the free rein attracts the kind of posters who add traffic but possibly diminish the brand. Where to draw the line, eh? I understand the idea of a basement, and I think it's actually a good thing. But if you kept up with the maintenance and cleaned out the corrosive debris from time to time, it might be a nicer place to come home to.The reason why we have off-topic forums for Politics and Religion is because we learned the hard way that people are going to post about those topics no matter what. So if there's no designated areas for that type of discussion, people will post about these subjects anyway throughout the various trading forums. So we figured it would be best to create a corral for those discussions than to constantly be deleting posts, providing explanations to users, banning people, etc.

The downside is many among the corrosive debris are volume posters, ergo page views. You raise a good point, but there is still something of a trade-off, I suppose. I did note the traffic component, which is what makes it a trade-off, in my opinion. And since it's Baron's show, he gets to make that trade-off irrespective of what any one of us thinks. It is his business and livelihood, after all. And evidently, he sides with you.The downside is many among the corrosive debris are volume posters, ergo page views.
If you were me, who would you ban today?I see your point but it's misleading of mgt to pretend as if only those two choices exist. It takes one mouse click for Baron or Magna to ban people. They can do so with my or anyone's account at any point in time. Then it's easy to screen for identical IPs even in light of the fact some may use proxy servers or vpns. It does not keep the most egregious pest away but 99% of hatred and racism would be gone from one day to another.
Imho it's a cheap excuse to tolerate racism and bigotry in thread B in order to keep it out of thread A.
If you were me, who would you ban today?
Perfectly stated, and I continually have a hard time understanding why some folks show no control, no discipline, and feel obligated to click on things that they know will upset them! And then compound the problem by whining endlessly about it, demanding the world conform to their notions of decency and propriety. One of life's enduring mysteries, I guess....The real question should be "I cannot understand why I'm unable to simply ignore that which makes me upset."
