Automated trading with R on IB

Keep your friends close, and your enemies closer?

OP, how you doin with the recommendations? What's the status? I'm all for giving a little smack but this thread is getting ridiculous.

Misunderstood then, my apologies. Thought you were referencing the entire IB API stack.

I think you misunderstood. My post was in reference to using IBrokers as a front end which is not feasible. I also automate through IB, but with a stable front end. I have nothing bad to say about the IB API structure.

Hey everyone, I am an avid R user and want to start automated trading using the connection between Interactive brokers API and R.... I am not to sure how I would automate the trade. Can someone point me in the right direction on where to learn how to set this up?

For a general resource on IB, API and automation issues you can also take a look, for instance, at this group on linkedin, which may have, buried inside the countless messages, some useful info: https://www.linkedin.com/groups/4932221/4932221-5911201089918631936

Total nonsense I automate with IB and clear over 800 mln usd equivalent notional every single month trading currencies via one of their IB APIs. Have also used FIX a while ago. IB is as solid as any other broker offering API access. Their risk management is top in the industry. I trust them with my money more than I would UBS or HSBC. I know quite a number other guys who clear even a lot more who work with IB. Admittedly IB is not recommended for a few handicapped people with limited understanding of trading in general and sub 50k accounts who think they can survive long enough with insane leverage levels. IB's margin and leverage policies are ultra conservative and I wish nothing else for the broker that handles my money.

IB is a great broker, I trust it, however technically there might be some issues especially in Forex. A clear example is when you try to send a limit orders that are actually better than B-A shown; since IB is an ECN and Forex is a "distributed market" ( Non centralized in an exchange ), it's quite possible that you order never gets filled cause Market-Makers won't allow you to be better than they. I'm tired to listen that constant complain and so far it's not clear how IB routes the orders, sometimes against any IB's client, sometimes with another MM. Tough area.
