Iâm not American and I come from a Country were no one I know owns a gun or sees a need to, I think America is a great place and always enjoy my visits there, never really had a strong view on guns and many American friends tell me that there has always been a gun culture in the USA and always will be and fair enough but what I donât get is as the weapons get more and more sophisticated no one seems willing to legislate or take on the powerful gun lobby to restrict them or have some of them banned, its one thing having a Colt 45 or similar but some of the weapons available are built to kill en masse which is what needs addressing.
I just hope your government has the balls to act after yet another tragedy.

This is my town. I live 2 miles from the school. I've been here my whole life and went to kindergarten at this school like many of those who died today. There is no crime in this town. A lot of people feel so safe that they don't even lock their doors. Nobody knew this town existed before today. Obama couldn't even pronounce the name right. "Newtown", not "Newton". Now, an otherwise great town will be known for one thing and one thing only, this sick psycho taking the lives of teachers and a bunch of young children. It's unbelievable. I don't know if any family friends lost children yet, but with so many dead, there's a very high probability. This is crazier than 9/11 to me, because this is home and you don't expect crazy things to happen here.

There are many restrictions on firearms. Just as a start, fully automatic rifles require a costly license, same with short-barrelled rifles, same with silencers. There are limits on how short a barrel a rifle or shotgun can have, ie no sawed-off shotguns.
To purchase a handgun, you have to satisfy a federal background check.
I'm not sure what you would ban. The differences in an assault rifle and a deer rifle are largely cosmetic. I don't know that a high capacity magazine has been a factor in any of these shootings. A typical goose hunting auto loading shotgun would have produced far more carnage than a couple of pistols.
Something has definitely changed, and it isn't the type of firearms that are available. All these tragedies were caused by young men, often teens. This type of stuff has never happened before. Only in the last decade or so. Somehow our culture has become poisoned, so poisoned that this kind of thing is becoming almost commonplace. If we are going to start banning things, maybe we should ban video games, violent movies and TV shows and divorce.
