Connecticut school massacre: British family mourn loss of Dylan Hockley

Dylan Hockley, six, was one of the 20 children massacred by Newtown resident Adam Lanza in a classroom at Sandy Hook Elementary School last Friday. His brother, Jake, eight, was also at the school and survived.

Dylan's parents, Ian and Nicole, who had lived in the UK for 18 years, moved onto the same street as the Lanza family after arriving in Newtown from Eastleigh in Hampshire in January 2011.

The street where the family live was heavily guarded by local police as freezing rain lashed down. Relatives and friends on both sides of the Atlantic mourned the loss of Dylan.

Mrs Hockley, who runs a small marketing firm and worked for Norwich Union in the UK, described Newtown as a "wonderful place to live and we're looking forward to being here for a long, long time."

I have a thought here, even if it's not original. Would it be that expensive for schools to have an armed officer stand at the door, checking people who come in? Every social security office in America has one.

All other doors could be locked from the outside so that they only open from the inside in case of an emergency. I think it really just comes comes down to planning, as we'll likely never change as a society enough to prevent individuals from having these kind of psychopathic tendencies.

I believe airports and especially airplanes are safer from terrorists now than they were before 9/11. Safer airports won't stop terrorism, but it at least makes the terrorists come up with other ways to fulfill their desires.

So I say, let's shuffle the funding, even if it means one less teacher, to get one armed guard in each building. Let the sick individuals try and pop their rocks in some other way. My son will go to school tomorrow, and anyone can walk in that building carrying whatever weapons they can handle. It sickens me to think that our children are just sitting ducks.
