Quote from atticus:
% of the population owning guns in China?
<0.01% excluding the military. Even cops do not carry guns unless responding to a special situation.

The simple fact is a knife is much less efficient than guns to kill people given the same condition & situation, that is undebatable. The tragedy in china is one of many examples, if that nutjob had a gun, the outcome would be much worse like in connecticut.
The 2nd amendment was originally intended to arm citizens to revolt against the government if it ever becomes corrupt & keep the authority in check, with british ruling still fresh on everyone's mind. Back then the military only had similar weapons, so it's a legitimate & noble idea. Today it is a perversion of the original goal, to uphold the original intent then every citizen should be allowed to legally own guided missiles, tanks, and stealth fighters at an affordable price as the government's military has advanced so far beyond just men with rifles. But the whole point is we do not need to do that anymore as the government has matured to the point that "revolt" can be handled legislatively not through force.
The only reason left to own a gun is to defend against home invaders, but i would think in the "best" country in the world, the citizens can rely on their police & government to protect them. And if guns were banned, then over time, those invaders wont have it either.
I lived in some pretty ghetto areas around nyc while young and never felt the need to own a gun. If i have to choose between the fractional probability owning a gun might make a difference in saving my life vs a ban that will result in those wholesale changes across the country. It's a no brainer to choose the latter.
It's all bullshit and mind boggling, but nothing will change because we have this phenomenal called lobbyist, and they always win.
